Happy New Year 2018!

Happy-New-Year-Images-2018-HD-1-1Another year is drawing to a close, and we look forward to new beginnings with the dawning of 2018. For some people, New Year’s Eve is a day of mixed feelings. On one hand, it is a time to celebrate the end of the year gone by and welcome what is in store in the New Year. On the other hand, some people experience a sense of nostalgia as they reflect on the events that took place in their lives in the past 12 months. Many people start thinking about New Year’s resolutions at this time of the year.

Some people celebrate New Year’s Eve by attending midnight church services, while others gather around in public venues such as Times Square in New  York City, or Trafalgar Square in London to count down for the closing seconds of the old year. Many people hold parties to farewell the finishing year and to celebrate the New Year. The size of festive events for New Year’s Eve can vary in size and theme. Some people attend formal masquerade balls while others have costume parties. Some people have small parties or gatherings at their homes. Many New Year’s Eve celebrations are highlighted by firework displays.

Many people start counting down to New Year’s Day in the last minute or seconds before the last night of the year ends and the New Year begins. Some people tune into watching televised countdowns. As the clock strikes midnight into New Year’s Day, many people celebrate this event by exchanging hugs, kisses, and wish each other a “Happy New Year”. In some parts of the world, including in the United States, many people sing the Scottish song “Auld Lang Syne” during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The newest star in our galaxy in 2018 is the amazing live singer, Parker Static!

Parker Static Name Promo 1Parker Static started singing at a very early age, being in a musical family her passion for singing was inevitable. With a sultry sound, Parker’s amazing voice has given her the ability to move from Pop to Ballads, Jazz, Country, R & B, Soft Rock and more. Parker has also won many awards for her singing, such as “Showtime Magazine TOP 10 performers in SL” and “The Soul Train’s Best Female entertainer of the year.” She’s fun and vivacious and her shows have something for everyone!

Parker performs every Tuesday at 8pm SLT. Please be sure and come by and listen to her amazing voice and wonderful, warm performance. You won’t be disappointed!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year and a wonderful 2018!

Welcome to the New Stars in our Galaxy!

Fall mantel

With October comes cooler weather, falling leaves and crisp apples as the earth prepares for it’s winter sleep. At STARS. we are preparing to add three new singers to our amazing line up of live music artists! We are so excited to bring these changes to you!

Here’s our new line up!

Sundays from 7-8pm SLT:

• Anj Gufstason on alternate Sundays as always.

NEW: Toxie Darkmatter will be singing on Oct. 1st and 29th. Greg Kat will be performing on Oct. 15th.

New: Agatha Nowles will be taking the spot on alternating Sundays beginning November 12th!

Tuesdays from 8-9pm SLT:

NEW: We welcome Jack Slade to our Tuesday time slot! He has been filling in on occasion and we are excited to bring him on as a regular performer!

Thursdays from 8-9pm SLT:

• Max Kleene continues to anchor our Thursday nights!

Let’s get to know the new performers in the STARS family of entertainers!

Toxic “Toxie” Darkmatter

What started as a bit of a joke with her performer friends, turned into a new outlet for her “musical therapy.” With a collection of music that’s a blend of classic to contemporary, sweet to naughty, Toxie has a rich, sultry voice that can shift gears and really soar. Enjoy jazz? Blues? Rock? A little pop maybe? Check out her song list and bring your requests, be ready to sing along, and let Toxie show you just how much she loves the music she shares.

Greg Kat

In the world of solo acoustic performers GregKat24 is somewhat of a musical chameleon. Performing well over 1,000 RL shows at many diverse venues ranging from college nooners, orientations, and night shows to major resorts as well as headlining club shows and opening for National acts in his native Pittsburgh, PA, he is as comfortable in front of thirty people as he is in front of three hundred or three thousand!

Greg’s solo acoustic show combines intoxicating party rock from the “big 80’s” Hot modern rock from the 90’s and today and enough classic tracks to keep everyone happy. With charm & musicianship Greg uses every trick (fair & unfair) to get the crowd joining in, singing along, and (God forbid) having fun! He is totally audience fueled, leaving plenty of room for requests and guaranteeing that on two show are ever alike!

Agatha Nowles

Get ready SL music scene – Agatha is coming! Her strong, smooth voice will take you down the alleyways of Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Eric Clapton, the Beatles, Pearl Jam, America – and will have you gasping for air with her bossa nova in English, Spanish and Portuguese. If you miss a show, you are missing out!

Jack Slade

Jack, an accomplished musician and songwriter, brings to the floor his personal life experiences with his mixed genre of distinct style of acoustics.
Music has been Jack’s passion for many years. A self-taught guitarist, he pours his heart out in his music from his long life journey of experiences, broken hearts and the greatness of our amazing world around us.
Jack delivers his music all the way from Minnesota and continues his music journey with his life experiences. A must-hear musician and you too will understand this personal connection and amazing talent among us.

Please join us on Oct. 1st as we welcome Toxie Darkmatter at her debut performance at 7pm slt ! Check the calendar tab at the top of the blog to keep up with our schedule, or join the STARS group inworld, or hit the scribo.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Meet our STARS! Lulu Lulibub, Club Hostess/Manager

Lulu Lulibub, 2017

Some of the important stars in our galaxy are our own staff! Lulu Lulibub is the manager and hostess at STARS, and I thought it would be fun to get to know her a little better.

Lulu has been in Second life for 10 years. She is an old pro! When asked what brought her into SL, Lulu said, “I came to visit a friend in RL and she played SL. I watched, shook my head and laughed because no one could get her off the computer. Next time I came back to visit her, I joined and have never left!” Many SL’ers tell me the same thing, that they came here because of a friend, and then they were hooked!

Lulu’s first job in SL was as a dancer, as many of us have done. I know I got my feet wet in SL employment by starting out this way.  Currently, Lulu works as manager and host at STARS, but she also works as a host at Chicago’s Place, Junkyard Blues, and  Blues Barn. She also hosts special events and benefits. Lulu is a busy lady!

Lulu’s favorite things to do in SL (other than working her many jobs!) is interacting with people from all around the world, working in music venues. Lulu said, “I also love making people laugh out loud with me . . . or at me is ok too. Pretty much people, music, dance, laugh, I am happy!  In SL there are so many talented musicians, artists and knowledgeable DJs. It’s why I’ve worked in music for so many years. ”

I asked Lulu how she chose her avatar name, and she said, “I knew I wanted my first name to be Lulu. Back then we could pick our own last names, and it was a toss up between Lulu Lulibub,  Lulu Ballyhoo, or Lulu Hulabaloo. Lulibub just rolled off the tongue smoother!”

In RL, Lulu lives in northern California, in the Mt. Shasta area, which is a gorgeous recreational area. She is single in RL, and has two children. Her son Michael is 28 and her daughter Courtney will be 25 soon. She also has two grandchildren — Abby, who is 7, and Allen who is almost 5. I asked Lulu what she does for a living in RL. She said, “I live the life of leisure. Now, if I just had the life of luxury . . .”

Lulu’s hobbies include camping, shooting pool, hiking, laughing and make others laugh.

STARS has live music three nights a week — Sundays, Tuesdays, and Mondays. Come by and say hello to Lulu. She never met a stranger, and will make you feel warm and welcomed.

Lastly, I asked Lulu to provide me with some pics that show the changes to her avatar over the years, since she’s been in SL so long. It’s fun to see how avatars change with the changes in SL.

Music Matters 2017

“Some people think music education is a privilege, but I think it’s essential to being human.”   ~ Jewel – singer, songwriter and instrumentalist

Music Matters

One of the strongest communities of people in SL are musicians and music lovers. Venues such as STARS abound, and the multitude of talented musicians across the grid is amazing. Coming in June, a special event called Music Matters 2017 will be held. Music Matters 2017 is a Second Life music community charity event, and all proceeds from the event benefit the RL charity Spread Music Now.

Music Matters is a group of Second Life performers & music lovers who come together once a year to raise money for children’s music education through Spread Music Now.

EVENT:  Music Matters 2017 (MM17)

WHEN:  Friday, June 23rd &  Saturday, June 24th

WHERE:  Second Life = Landmark to be provided later

BENEFITING:  Spread Music Now (SMN)

This event is ably coordinated by some amazing and talented people in the SL music world. Coordinating the event is AllieKattz Resident and Carol Greenwood, assisted by SL musician Collin Martin (collinmartin).

SpreadMusicNow believes that by funding music programs that clearly foster an appreciation for music, children will reap the benefits of improved academic performance, awakened creativity, heightened self-esteem, and an overall sense of accomplishment.

Study after study proves that regardless of socioeconomic background, music- making students do better in school than those who have no music involvement. Whether it is improved spatial-temporal reasoning, which is integral to math, or repetition of tunes and melodies, which is integral to verbal memory, learning, playing and creating music benefits children in a myriad of ways.

STARS Welcomes Guitarhero!

Guitarhero Dougall HeadshotSoulvision was unable to be in world tonight for his regular gig, so we were pleased to welcome Guitarhero for his debut performance at STARS!

Guitarhero’s RL name is Douglas, and he is 49 years old. He has been in SL since 2005. He lives in Canton Ohio in the US and attends college full time, studying for his Audio Production B.S. degree. He sings in RL as well as SL.

Guitarhero’s taste in music is eclectic, including blues, jazz, classic rock, hard rock and other Americana styles. He’s been singing and playing music since he was 7 years old. And he’s been performing live in SL since 2006. He says he is a “relic musician.”

Guitarhero a STARS_001

The first instrument that Guitarhero learned to play was the accordion, and he quickly picked up many other instruments. Currently, his primary instruments are the acoustic and electric guitar. His secondary instrument is the bass guitar. His third instrument is anything keyboard based, including organ, synthesizer and piano. He can also owns and plays theramin. He is familiar with the mandolin and banjo, and also fluent with violin, double bass, cello, and viola. Lastly, but certainly not least, he plays harmonica and mouth harp as well.

Guitarhero’s electronic guitar is a 1980 Gibson ES-335-D.O.T. hollow-body double F-hole, double cut-away electric guitar. Guitarhero says “I use a large selection of vintage effects units that the guitar greats would have used. I then feed the signal into a live tube pre-amp and into a mixer. My vocal mic is a Audio-Technica® AT2035 mic and my other mic is a Shure® SM58 both into live tube pre-amps and again into the mixer.

“The mixer is a Mackie complete with its own built in pre-amps and effects. It uses a DBX compressor as an insert so there are no audio surprises or squeals. I feed the outputs to multiple locations for headphones and recording and the main output is fed to my computers Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 audio interface.”

Guitarhero uses B.U.T.T. (Broadcast Using This Tool) to stream the mix into SL.

Cleveland Jam Live Stream at STARS!

Several times a year, live musicians from Second Life get together in various parts of the USA and hold “jams,” where they spend several days together playing music, partying, and generally have a wonderful time getting to know each other in real life!

On Thursday, Feb. 23rd STARS was proud to present SL musicians Ed Lowell, Annan Dreamscape, Bat Masters,Beth Odets, DandantheDoritoMan, ezcape Hax, Gandolf Mornington, Jeff Tully, Meetu Hannu, MrMulti Writer, Norith Westland, and Vinnie – all who live-streamed into Second Life directly from the Cleveland Jam!

These amazing and talented musicians provided laughter and fun along with some amazing live music. There were guitar players, mandolin players, keyboards, and lots of vocals. They did a fabulous job and we thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of live streaming their concert.

Here are some photos from the event:

We hope to have them back again next jam!

Happy New Year!

It’s hard to believe, but we’re a month into 2016 already. January passed in a flash and the rest of the year promises to pass just as quickly.

Quick fun facts about 2016:

• The high school graduating class of 2016 were born in 1998.

• Chinese New Year is on Monday, Feb. 8th. 2016, and is the Year of the Monkey!

• The Summer Olympics are being held this year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

• 2016 is a presidential election year in the US (just in case you’ve been living under a rock!)

• Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, so an early spring is predicted!

And last but certainly not least, the Star Journey sim redo is almost finished! It’s an incredible labor of love and worth a look. More about this soon!
